Make your own toothpaste!
In case you haven’t noticed there’s a lot of talk these days about toothpaste and the ingredients in them that may be toxic. Because I am aware of this I sometimes pick up a natural toothpaste product for my family. However, in all honesty I still go back to the store brands because they are easier on my pocketbook.
I have found lots of recipes for homemade toothpaste online, and for a long time I’ve thought about making my own… I just never got around to doing it. Well, now that I took the plunge, I can honestly say I can’t believe I waited for so long!
I found this recipe on Top 10 Home Remedies website. I’ve read other recipes before, but this one was just so simple with three ingredients, and I had them all in my pantry. So I pulled them out and took 2 minutes to stir everything together. Yes, it was that quick! Then, I brushed my teeth.
Aside from having the cleanest feeling mouth that I’ve had in a long time, my teeth are whiter, my smile is brighter, and I can’t wait to get everyone in my household on board to try it. This is definitely a keeper.
If you’ve never thought about the toxins in store bought toothpaste you’d be wise to inform yourself. Then you’re equipped with deciding whether you’ll continue to use the store brand, purchase a more natural product, or make your own.
If you’re up to making your own toothpaste, give this recipe a whirl!
Homemade Toothpaste
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- Small jar
Instructions:
Stir all ingredients together in a small jar until well mixed. When ready to use, you can dip a clean toothbrush in the mixture, or use a Popsicle stick or a small spoon to transfer to your toothbrush. If you’d like your toothpaste to have a minty taste just add a few drops of peppermint essential oil. This step isn’t necessary, just a personal preference. I didn’t have it so I didn’t use it!
If you’re curious about why you’re using these ingredients, here’s a bit of info!
Health benefits of the ingredients:
Coconut Oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties and research even shows that massaging coconut oil into your gums for about 10 minutes daily significantly reduces plaque.
Baking Soda helps to whiten your teeth as it acts as an abrasive agent. It neutralizes acids in the mouth, reducing the chances of bad breath. It has also been shown to remove plaque more effectively than products that do not use baking soda.
Turmeric is good for overall health, including oral health. It has anti-plaque, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.
So, if you’ve ever been curious about making your own toothpaste, this recipe is a good place to start. It’s simple, effective, and it tastes good! Just beware…your teeth will be white but your toothbrush will be yellow!
